Purpose Used for National Forest planning and assessment and other natural resource applications. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used PROJECT: North Coast California Baseline Mapping and Existing Map Updating(NOFO) PROJECT DATE: 1995-1999 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A multi phase project intended to develop existing vegetation maps on National Forest lands and adjancent non-agency lands in order to develop vegetation data for the entire Northwest Forest Plan area. Phase 1 developed maps on the Mendocino and Six Rivers National Forests. Phase 2 developed maps on the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests and immediately adjacent private lands. Phase 3 developed maps for non-USFS lands within the Northwest Forest Plan area not previously mapped in phases 1 and 2. New map products were developed via image classification, terrain based modeling and field/photo review. Accuracy assessments of the vegetation map attributes have been generated for the National Forest, Non-USFS, and combined acreages. TILE DESCRIPTION: The majority of tile 1 was originally mapped under the third phase of the NOFO project. A small portion of the tile was mapped during the first phase within the Six Rivers NF. Baseline CALVEG map products were derived through image classification, ecological modeling, and field/photo review. Extensive on-screen editing was performed to minimize anomolous classification and modeling error. Vegetation data for tile 1 were assembled, integrated and/or generated by the Region 5 Remote Sensing Lab and its contractors. IRS Imagery 1994 DOQQ Revisions PROJECT: North Coast-California Existing Map Updating (Nocoast) PROJECT DATE: 1998-2002 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A project intended to update existing vegetation maps on adjancent non-FS lands in order to maintain vegetation data for the entire Northwest Forest Plan area. Data created during the original three phases of the NOFO project (see above) are updated according to the change data generated by Change Detection Team. This data spectrally compares the baseline Landsat TM source imagery from 1994 to the update Landsat TM imagery from 1998. New segments were generated from the 1998 TM imagery for the change areas and to correct deficiencies in the original polygons. Any polygon that has a minimum of 25% of its area classified as change is targeted for updating. Updates to COVERTYPE, VEGTYPE and VEGTYPE2 were done with edits from photo interpretation. Structural attributes were completely re-classified spectrally and edited. TILE DESCRIPTION: All of tile 1 was part of the North coast update and improveme project. Entity_and_Attribute_Overview LAYER DESCRIPTION FROM FRDB DATA DICTIONARY: Existing Vegetation (rev. 09/30/99) The existing vegetation map layer is the source for CALVEG types. The CALVEG Classification System is a statewide system developed by the USDA Forest Service in Region 5 to serve as a standard for existing vegetation maps. (USDA Forest Service. 1981. CALVEG: A Classification of California Vegetation. Pacific Southwest Region, Regional Ecology Group, San Francisco CA. 168 pp.). The following are the general mapping and classification rules for the existing Vegetation Mapping Criteria: Minimum Mapping Size 2.5 acres for contrasting vegetation conditions based on vegetation type, tree canopy closure, and overstory tree size (see tables 38, 40, and 39) No minimum mapping unit for lakes and conifer plantations Life Form Classification Rules. Life Forms are initially generated from classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery into the following hierarchical classes: Conifer - greater than 10 percent conifer cover as the dominant type Mix - greater than 10 percent conifer cover and greater than 20 percent hardwood cover Hardwood - greater than 10 percent hardwood cover as the dominant type Shrub - greater than 10 percent shrub cover as the dominant type Grass - greater than 10 percent grass cover as the dominant type Barren - less than 10 percent cover of any natural vegetation Agriculture Urban Ice/snow Water Subsequently, the following items are mapped within Life Form classes: Vegetation Type (CALVEG): Rules have been developed by Vegetation Zone for setting parameters for CALVEG mapping. Complete CALVEG mapping keys can be obtained from the Remote Sensing Lab. Contact Hazel Gordon (916-454-0812) for specific Zone keys for the CALVEG classification stystem. Tree Density: Conifer and hardwood tree density is mapped as a function of canopy closure in ten- percent classes. In conifer/hardwood mixtures, relative density of each is mapped as well as total tree canopy closure, with conifer tree density stored in item DENSITY, hardwood tree density stored in DENSITY2, and total tree density store in DEN_TOTAL. Overstory Tree Size: Overstory tree size is mapped as a function of crown diameters of overstory trees as interpreted from aerial photography and satellite imagery. The plurality size condition of the predominant, dominant, and co-dominant trees in a stand is assigned a Regional size class (tables 39A and 39B). Additional Coverage Items: Ecological Tile: The basic units used to store existing vegetation layers within a statewide existing vegetation library. Source is from Goudey and Smith (1994), Ecological Units of California-Subsections (map), USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region, San Francisco CA. Scale 1:1,000,000. WHR Type, Size, Density, and Range: Corresponding parameters from the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships classification system. Northwest Size, Northwest Structure: Size and structural attributes specific to monitoring requirements for the Northwest Forest Plan and not present in Forest vegetation layers outside the Klamath Province. Covertypes (or life forms, as they are often called) are identified according to those given under Life Form Classification Rules in the Existing Vegetation section. Description is a general category linked to Veg_Type describing the units. The code MIX is used for the combination of primary vegetation layers (conifer) and secondary vegetation layers (hardwood in a conifer and hardwood vegetation mixture. Primary and secondary vegetation types use the same CALVEG nomenclature in Table 38. Size = 3; type = alpha VEG_TYPE DESCRIPTION CON conifer forest/woodland HDW hardwood forest/woodland MIX mixed conifer/hardwood woodland SHB shrub HEB herbaceous BAR barren, rock, snow WAT water AGR agriculture URB urban/residential SNW snow/ice All covertype labels are derived directly from CALVEG labels Updated 6/20/01 TABLE 38 - CALVEG TYPE Fields in this table refer to the CALVEG classification system. Vegtype is a two-letter code designating primary (or dominant) vegetation alliances. Description is a short phrase that lists either the common vegetation name of the primary vegetation alliance or the land-use category linked to Vegtype. Covertype is a three-letter code describing land-use ( AGR, BAR, URB, WAT) and land-cover (CON, HDW, SHB) categories. Refer to Table 37 for the Covertype names. Note that MIX does not occur in this table. Prod refers to productivity of the site as determined to be either a productive forest site a non-productive site (N), or a non-forested site (O). Timberland productivity for these codes is further described in Table 43.
