Pacheco Pond is located near the lower section of Novato Creek, which it is seasonally separated from by flood gates. This area experienced water quality problems and fish kills in 2000 and 2001. During the April 19, 2001 fish kill, steelhead trout, juvenile striped bass, smelt, and bullheads were among the hundreds of fish found dead (Belsky, 2001). While limited water quality tests were inconclusive, there were reports of a white milky discharge (seen in the picture) and sulfurous odors, as well as human responses of nausea and burning sensations upon contact with the water. Photo taken on May 29, 2000 and provided by Sue Lattanzio, Friends of Novato Creek.

Friends of Novato Creek have reported a decline in wildlife during the late 1990's within Pacheco Pond. However, the group stated that waterfowl have increased again in numbers beginning in late 2001 and 2002. Photo taken on August 4, 2001 and provided by Sue Lattanzio, Friends of Novato Creek.

Pacheco Creek flows into Pacheco Pond and is seen here during bank overflow conditions following a minor rainfall event. Friends of Novato Creek state that this creek may historically have supported a steelhead trout run. Photo taken on March 3, 2001 and provided by Sue Lattanzio, Friends of Novato Creek.

This is a picture of Ignacio Creek before flood control modifications. The creek runs into Arroyo San Jose, a tributary of Pacheco Pond that Friends of Novato Creek report may historically have supported a steelhead trout run. Photo taken in the early 1990's and provide by Sue Lattanzio, Friends of Novato Creek.
