Area Lagunitas Creek
Topic Fish: Migrant Adult Salmonid Catch in Nicasio Creek 1961-1971

Caption:  This chart shows numbers of adult coho salmon or steelhead trout captured at the upstream migrant trap operated by California Department of Fish and Game on Nicasio Creek, below the reservoir, from 1961-1971. This trap was operated to capture upstream migrants and release them above the reservoir. Two downstream traps also functioned to capture fish above the reservoir to bring them below as outmigration occurred. The traps were financed by Marin Municipal Water District after the construction of the reservoir in 1960. Coho out-numbered steelhead in several years of trapping with a count that peaked in 1966-67 at 656 coho total. In some years, there was a high number of grilse or jacks, which are precocious males that return after just one year in the ocean. Note that counts may be incomplete for the 1961/62 and 1962/63 seasons and that there were fish caught in 1960/61 that are not shown above because they were not identified to gender (see Chart Table). See Info Links for more information.
