Topic Sediment: 1999 Percent Fines - Salmonid Survival Index, McBain&Trush

Caption:  This chart shows percent fine sediment based salmonid egg survival estimates for pool-tail substrates in ten Garcia River tributaries. Estimated percent salmonid egg survival is based on methods from Tappel and Bjornn (1983). Salmonid egg survival estimates are dependent on cumulative percent of substrate <0.85 mm and <9.5 mm and can be useful when sediment size distributions for a site contain low variance. High variance results in a broad range in survival predictions, such as the North Fork Garcia. The confidence interval of survival estimates shows a high variability. McBain and Trush (2000) express low confidence in the salmonid survival estimates based on percent fines and suggest that methods based on permeability may provide improved survival estimates.
