California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) biologist Rick Macedo uses backpack electroshocker in the Moat Creek lagoon on August 5, 1993, almost exactly a year after the drilling mud spill. Craig Bell reaches down with a net to catch fish stunned by the current and will put the specimens in the pail in his right hand. Note that both men have rubber boots and Craig has gloves to avoid being shocked. Click on InfoLinks for findings in report on spill mitigation. Picture by Pat Higgins.

Three-spined stickleback were the only fish species present. Craig Bell shows Brian Thurman of the Moat Creek Management Agency the catch. While CDFG did not catch any fish species in upper Moat Creek, they did catch several size classes of Pacific giant salamanders. The larger one is an adult that has remained in the water and retained gills. The smaller specimen is a young of the year Pacific giant. The larger animals live in pools while the younger animals choose riffles or run type habitats. Click on InfoLinks for findings in report on spill mitigation. Picture by Pat Higgins. 8/5/93.
