KRIS Garcia River: Chart Page

Area Lower Garcia / Estuary
Topic Fish: 1995 Estuary Juvenile Steelhead Length June-August

Caption:  This chart shows the length of the juvenile steelhead in seining samples collected by Higgins (1995) in the Garcia River estuary in June, July and August 1995. Fish ranged in length from 70 mm to over 180 mm. Yearling and older steelhead are generally those over 100 mm (4 inches) with two year old fish usually over 150 mm (6 inches). Size classes are shown in different colors: young of the year are blue, yearlings light blue and two year old steelhead in dark green. The abundance of older age steelhead is expected in the estuary as fish have moved downstream and are staged for ocean entry. See InfoLinks for more information on sampling methods and findings of study by Higgins (1996).
