Sampling station G5 in the Garcia River estuary was located where the river meets the beach and makes a right angle turn to the south. At the bluffs, the estuary empties into the Pacific Ocean with the Garcia maintaining an open bar. This is unlike many coastal estuaries which close to the ocean and become lagoons. Note surf at right. Station 6 is at the far end of the sand spit where the Garcia enters the ocean. Photo courtesy of Pat Higgins. June 1995.

Sampling station G6 is visible in the distance just short of the surf line and is where the Garcia River estuary empties into the Pacific Ocean. The Garcia is one of the few Mendocino coastal rivers that maintains an open bar. Photo courtesy of Pat Higgins. July 1995.

Garcia estuary side arm that formed bay type estuarine habitat is in the lower center of this photograph (Station G7). Salinity was high at this location even in June when river flows were high and Marine fish species were present through the sampling period. Photo courtesy of Pat Higgins. August 1995.
