Close up of pool sampled (GAR_1) on August 21, 2002 to compare with electrofishing samples taken near the same location in August 1952 (Kimsey, 1953). Note the rising trout in the tailout in the lower left of photo. Notice good over-hanging cover from willow associated with restoration project and that there is grass on the right shore indicating almost full cattle exclusion. Photo by Pat Higgins.

Zoom on habitat in pool above Highway 1 (GAR_1) with two rising steelhead juveniles in the foreground. Maximum depth was about 4.5 feet but the undercut under the bushes sometimes extended back two to four feet. Photo by Pat Higgins.

Pat Higgins stops dive crew to check on counts to avoid redundancy. With three divers, the fish sometimes tended to get herded upstream raising the possibility of double counting. close watch was kept on the bush line on the far bank and periodic checks were made to see if schools were moving downstream on the shallow side. Craig Bell of Trout Unlimited gives Walt Stornetta a token of appreciation, a Calcutta "Stogey" limited edition fishing reel, for his cooperation in restoring the riparian zones of the Garcia River. Americorp volunteers Libby Earthman (center left) and Jennifer Frisnell (center right) not only helped with the dive survey but planted trees on the site during previous projects as part of their service.
