KRIS Gualala : Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta IdentifierGual_CDFG_Fish
Type of DataFish survey data from Cal Fish and Game studies 1950-2001
OriginatorCalifornia Department of Fish and Game
DescriptionElectrofishing samples from the Gualala River basin collected by the California Department of Fish and Game. Recent data collected by Jones and Harris are at repeatable reaches and use similar method and effort so that densities, biomass and standing crop can all be gauged and compared. Most recent data collected in association with CDFG NCWAP habitat typing is single pass efishing with no block nets. Sampling using dive surveys for coho presence and absence in 2001 use the ten pool method advanced by NMFS (Adams et al., 1999). Only one downstream migrant trap operated in Pepperwood Creek in 1974.

Request LogRequesting full dataset from CDFG NCWAP e-fishing and presence and absence coho dive surveys of Gualala during 2001.
Receipt LogGot some sub-sample of dive data from CLDB in the form of data sheets for main North Fork and House Creek. Not able to use because metadata never provided.
Access ConstraintsOlder data available in Jones (2000). Data collected in 2001for NCWAP being made available in KRIS. Release of 2001 data from CDFG coho presence/absence surveys not widely available.
Progress LogOnly got partial results of NCWAP e-fishing. Cynthia LeDoux Bloom refused to share and also would not provide paper CDFG reports for scanning into KRIS Gualala Bibliography.

Serial NameCDFG Fish Data
PurposeData collected by CDFG to monitor coho salmon and steelhead populations of the Gualala Basin. EIP Associates collected fish data as part of lower Gualala EIS for gravel extraction by Gualala Aggregates.
Data Quality InformationVaries due to different sampling methodologies.
Use ConstraintsFish density should only be calculated for those samples where multiple pass efforts were made.
Supplemental InformationVarious file memos from CDFG contain these data (Kimsey, 1953; Cox, 1995; Jones, 2000) as well as reports from private sources (EIP, 1994). See discussions of fish community structure in Higgins (1997). Only recent surveys record amphibian as well as fish species. CDFG should be publishing results of 2001 presence/absence survey early in 2002 as part of stock assessment for coho as required by the CA Fish and Game Commission as a basis for whether to list coho as Endangered under Cal ESA.
