| Caption: Four reaches of lower Hayfork Creek were surveyed to determine the use by juvenile steelhead of various stream habitat types during low flow conditions. Reach 1 = below Nine Mile Bridge, Reach 2 = below Miner Creek, Reach 3 = below Corral Creek and Reach 4 = above and below Grassy Flat Creek. The use of pools was much greater in those reaches immediately below Miner Creek and Corral Creek. When flows are low and water temperatures are high young steelhead seem to favor habitats with turbulence and avoid pools. Part of the reason that riffle habitats are selected may be related to dissolved oxygen (D.O), which is inversely related to water temperatures. During times of temperature stress, young steelhead fish may seek out turbulent environments because of higher D.O. levels. Click on Info Links for more information. | |
