Topic PH: Maximum Daily Upper Klamath Lake at Shoal Bay (BOR) 1992-1995
 
Caption:  The maximum pH of Upper Klamath Lake at Shoal Bay fluctuates from about 7.5 to over 10. The latter is approaching the lethal level for juvenile suckers, which inhabit Upper Klamath Lake. Algae blooms in Upper Klamath Lake consume large amounts of carbon dioxide and help drive the acid-base balance towards extremely basic conditions. The annual peaks in pH of over 10 are driven by such an algae bloom. Note that the pH was slightly higher in 1994, which was a critically dry year.
