This 1944 airphoto shows the Stuart Fork drainage where the Van Matre and other ranch lands were located. Buckeye creek comes in from the bottom of photo and joins Stuart Fork just east of the Van Matre ranch. The drainage on the upper right would be the east fork of Stuart Fork. The drainage on the upper left would be Mule creek.

This 1944 airphoto shows the Trinity river above the confluence with Stuart Fork. The confluence is in the lower center of photo right above where the Trinity "s" turns around the tip of Fairview ridge. This shot shows an excellent view of Bowerman ridge dividing the Trinity drainage with the east fork of Stuart Fork on the left.

This 1944 airphoto shows the Trinity downriver from the Stuart Fork confluence. The dam location is just downriver from the Papoose drainage coming in from the right. The area downriver from the dam under what is now Lewiston lake shows extensive evidence of bucket dredge mining. Mining tailings were quarried from this area for use in construction of the dam and to deepen Lewiston lake.

This image is a map showing the Shasta and Trinity Diversion projects. The Trinity lake and dam are part of the Central Valley Project. The Shasta and Trinity River Division projects were authorized 1955. Construction of the lake and dam begin in 1957 and concluded in 1962. The lake was full in 1964. In this image the Clear Creek Tunnel route is can be seen. The Clear Creek Tunnel runs from Lewiston Reservoir near Lewiston Dam southeasterly to Judge Francis Carr Powerhouse and Whiskeytown Lake. The tunnel is 10.7 miles long, 17.5' in diameter and has a flow capacity of 3,200 cfs.
