The Institute for Fisheries Resources

The Institute for Fisheries
Resources is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
study, protection and enhancement of both marine and
anadromous biological resources on the Pacific coast of
the United States and Canada. The Institute is
independent of but affiliated with the Pacific Coast
Federation of Fishermen's Associations (PCFFA) -- the
largest organization of commercial fishermen on the west
coast. PCFFA has long been involved in resource
conservation and protection issues, and the Institute for
Fisheries Resources is expanding and carrying on PCFFA's
24-year conservation tradition.
The mission of IFR is to advance science related to management of watersheds and near coastal waters to understand mechanisms related to the decline of marine and anadromous fish species. The ultimate goal of such studies is to guide resource management to greater sustainability so that fisheries are viable now and in the future. IFR staff have researched, published and campaigned in recent years on a number of critical habitat issues, including fish-friendlier disposal of dredging spoils off San Francisco Bay and the Columbia River; the need for stronger wetland protections; protection of fish habitat, including marine reserve areas; and, reform of dams and their impacts on fisheries. |
