INSTITUTE FOR FISHERIES RESOURCES GIS TECHNICAL WORK GROUP -- GIS METADATA LIBRARY: Garcia/Navarro/Russian/WMarinSonoma/NorthBay COVERAGE NAME: coho_pres_abs.shp METADATA FILE: coho_pres_abs.shp.txt METADATA FILE DATE: April 28, 2002 METADATA PREPARER: Eli Asarian Institute for Fisheries Resources (IFR) 791 Eighth Street Ste. N Arcata, CA 95521 (707) 822-9428 COVERAGE DESCRIPTION: This shapefile contains coho presence / absence data for historical coho streams between Wages Creek (northern Mendocino County) to the Corte Madera Creek (Southern Marin County). The streams listed in this database are those known historically to harbor coho salmon juveniles in a draft California Department of Fish and Game database, but there are almost certainly other historical coho streams that are not included in this database. Some rows from the CDFG database are not included in this shapefile because I did not have GIS hydrography layers for all areas (including the Eel River drainage, the coast north of Wages Creek, the thin strip of coastline south of the Gualala River) and streams south of the Golden Gate (San Francisco) were clipped from the database at Scott Harris's request due to concerns over data accuracy in that area. This database contains only data on the presence / absence of coho salmon young-of-the-year, not any other life-stages. Methods: This shapefile was assembled from 3 sources: California Department of Forestry (CDF) 1:24,000 scale hydrography (from Northern Mendocino to the mouth of the Russian River), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1:100,000 scale (mouth of the Russian River to Corte Madera Creek), and a California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) Microsoft Excel database of coho presence absence, contributed to KRIS by Scott Harris of CDFG. The CDFG database had fields partially filled in for LLID (the unique stream reach identifier field in the CDF 1:24k hydrography layer). Eli Asarian (KRIS-IFR staff) filled in the rest of the LLIDs (a few could not be determined because they were un-named streams). The CDFG database was reformatted to meet DBASEIV conventions, and some summary statistics were calculated using Excel, and the CDFG database was converted to a .dbf files. A few alterations were made to the CDFG database: 1) The LLID for North Branch North Fork Navarro River (NOAA 281) was deleted (it was the LLID for John Smith Creek) and the LLID2 entry was used instead (it was correct). 2) The LLID for Rancheria Creek (NOAA 295) was corrected (because it was wrong). An ArcView Join, and then a Convert to Shapefile command was used to join the CDFG database to 1:24k CDF Hydrography using the LLID field as the common field. The CDF 1:24k routed hydrography with LLID does not exist south of the Russian River, but there is an EPA 1:100k hydrography layer with a unique ID column PNMCD. PNMCDs were manually added (copy/paste) to the CDFG database from the EPA 1:100k hydrography. Then, an ArcView Join and then a Convert to Shapefile command was used to join the CDFG database to 1:100k EPA hydrography using the PNMCD field as the common field. One stream (Easkoot Creek near Stinson Beach in Marin County) was added from the CDF 1:24 hydrography using a field that was manually added to both the CDFG database and CDF 1:24k hydrography. For accuracy about the spatial accuracy of the hydrography, see the metadata records for the hydrography layers (streams24, streams100). DFG's Harris told me that he knows of errors in the CDFG database that he has not yet been able to fix and requested that I inform people to treat this data cautiously because it is still in draft form (in will be updated later this year). Another error that could be present it that incorrect PNMCD and LLID be incorrect, causing the data for a stream to be attached to the wrong spatial feature.
