Topic Habitat Typing: Mainstem Noyo River Embeddedness
 
Caption:  Gravel embeddedness is a measure of gravel quality at potential salmonid spawning sites that is done visually during habitat typing surveys. Embeddedness is the degree to which substrate in pool tail crests are buried. Optimal spawning habitat according to CDFG (1998) is less than 25% embedded (Category 1). The Mainstem Noyo River had relatively poor spawning habitat conditions with 61% of pool tail crests measured showing more than 75% embeddedness. This measure is far less useful for determining gravel suitability and trends than quantitative methods such as McNeil samples. The length of the survey was 90,729 feet or 17.2 miles. Data collected by Georgia Pacific and supplied for use in KRIS by the California Department of Fish and Game, Sacramento, CA. Click on the InfoLinks tab to review the habitat typing report.
