Topic Restoration: Log Jam Barriers Removed by Type in 1964

Caption:  The California Department of Fish and Game began restoration efforts on the Noyo River by removing logjams, which were popularly conceived to be barriers to anadromous fish passage. Holman and Evans (1964) stated that in fact only 5% of barriers were complete blocks to anadromous passage, 40% presented partial barriers at some flows and the majority were only potential barriers if they caught more debris in future years. They believed that the flushing of sediment from above jams would substantially increase spawnable areas for salmon and steelhead.
