Topic Habitat Typing: Little North Fork Noyo Embeddedness
 
Caption:  Gravel embeddedness is a measure of gravel quality at potential salmonid spawning sites taken ocularly during habitat typing surveys. Embeddedness is the degree to which substrate in pool tail crests are buried. Optimal spawning habitat according to CDFG (1998) is less than 25% embedded (see InfoLinks for more information). The Little North Fork Noyo River showed substantially impaired spawning habitat suitability with most substrate in pool tail crests showing more than 75% embeddedness. This measure is far less useful for determining gravel suitability and trends than quantitative methods such as McNeil samples but provides a gross indication of habitat quality. The survey covered 22,458 feet, or approximately 4.3 miles, to a point where there were impassable barriers. Data collected by Georgia Pacific and supplied for use in KRIS by the California Department of Fish and Game, Sacramento, CA.
