Topic Habitat Typing: Duffy Gulch Embeddedness
 
Caption:  Gravel embeddedness is a measure of gravel quality at potential salmonid spawning sites taken ocularly during habitat typing surveys. Embeddedness is the degree to which substrate in pool tail crests is buried. Optimal spawning habitat according to Flosi and Reynolds (1994) is less than 25% embedded (see InfoLinks for more information). Duffy Gulch showed substantially impaired spawning habitat suitability with 90% of substrate in pool tail crests showing greater than 50% embeddedness. This measure is far less useful for determining gravel suitability and trends than quantitative methods such as McNeil samples, but, this metric provides some indication of habitat quality. The length of the survey was 9,815 feet or 1.9 miles. Data collected by Georgia Pacific and supplied for use in KRIS by the California Department of Fish and Game, Sacramento, CA.
