Area Pudding Creek
Topic Habitat Typing: Pudding Creek Embeddedness

Caption:  Gravel embeddedness is a measure of gravel quality at potential salmonid spawning sites taken ocularly during habitat typing surveys. Embeddedness is the degree to which substrate in pool tail crests are buried. Optimal spawning habitat according to CDFG is less than 25% embedded (see InfoLinks). Pudding Creek showed substantially impaired spawning habitat suitability with 67% of pool tail crests measured showing more than 75% embeddedness. This measure is far less useful for determining gravel suitability and trends than quantitative methods such as McNeil samples but embeddedness provides a gross indication of habitat quality. The survey covered 62,728 feet or 11.9 miles in September 1994. Data collected by Georgia Pacific and supplied for use in KRIS by the California Department of Fish and Game, Sacramento, CA.
