INSTITUTE FOR FISHERIES RESOURCES GIS TECHNICAL WORK GROUP -- GIS METADATA COVERAGE NAME: asc_sheep_weir.shp METADATA FILE: asc_sheep_weir.shp.txt METADATA FILE DATE: June 22, 2005 METADATA PREPARER: Eli Asarian Institute for Fisheries Resources (IFR) 791 Eighth Street Ste. N Arcata, CA 95521 (707) 822-9428 COVERAGE DESCRIPTION: The shapefile asc_sheep_weir.shp shows location of the weir at the bottom of the Sheepscot River watershed that was used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1994-1996 to trap upstream-migrating Atlantic salmon. METHODS: Asc_sheep_weir.shp was derived from two sources: 1. sheepkm (see below for metadata) 2. A Microsoft Access database of weir data maintained by the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission (ASC). Asc_sheep_weir.shp was created by IFR staff from sheepkm by adding SITECODE (a combination of REACHID and RIVERKM) to the attribute table, selecting out the features that was the weir (by linking to the ASC database using the SITECODE field). These points are part of a system of river centerlines, routes and measures used to locate events relevant to Atlantic salmon. Fish-related events are said to occur at or very near sites coded with a unique identifier for the river or one of its tributaries, and followed by the RiverKilometer distance upstream from the zero point on the mainstem, or of a tributary. A point exists every 10 meters along the centerline, and carries a value denoting its distance in kilometers upstream. For example, the fifteenth point up the mainstem from the start point is coded as 150 meters or 0.15 kilometers upstream. A sitecode for that location is given as "11MAINST0.15". Purpose: This dataset exists to allow for the location of fish-related events along the Sheepscot River as distances upstream on the mainstem and selected tributaries. The RiverKilometer system of which these measures are a part allows a comprehensive non-spatial database of Maine Atlantic salmon data to be linked and queried by spatially repeatable site codes. This system avoids the use of geographic coordinates in site codes since those values differ over time when obtained using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and also allows the inclusion of historic locational data gathered based on distances from landmarks. The table contains codes to link to the mainstem and each tributary, and FROM and TO values used to measure along established routes for each stream. Process_Step: Process_Description: ESRI's ArcInfo 8.3 Add Route Event Theme tool is used to generate RiverKilometer point measures by providing applying a table of measures (sheepkmt.dbf) which are overlain as points along routes of an ArcInfo coverage (sheepkm; route.distance). The table contains codes (REACHID) to link to the mainstem and each tributary, and FROM and TO values in 10-meter increments used to measure along established routes for each stream. The routes used in this process all point upstream, and carry codes (REACHID) uniquely identifying each stream to link to the data table. A field called RIVERKM is added and calculated in the sheepkm.shp dataset to be the value in kilometers of the distance of each point upstream from the point of origin of its route (REACHID). For example, the fifteenth point upstream along the mainstem from the start point is coded with a FROM value of 150 (meters), and this equates to 0.15 kilometers. Finally, Site codes for locating fish-related events can be established by concatenating the REACHID and RIVERKM fields to arrive at values such as "11MAINST0.15".
