| Caption: The chart shows aquatic invertebrate sampling results from Stemple Creek in May, 1995 contrasted with samples taken in August of the same year. The numbers of stoneflies, mayflies, caddisflies, and the total species or taxa found are displayed. These orders of insects are very pollution intolerant and are, therefore, good water quality indicators. The method of collection varies from standard California RAPID Bioassessment as samples were examined in the field and most invertebrates released back to the stream. Surveys were on the least degraded areas of Stemple Creek. The exercise was more to note indicator species rather than as an index of biodiversity. August samples reflect diminishing diversity of pollution intolerant taxa, which would be expected as flows dropped. The Huntley site shows considerably less diversity indicating more adverse water quality conditions for aquatic life. The increase in over-all taxa indicates that as water quality deteriorated, pollution tolerant species increased. August samples may have been taken from isolated pools if riffle areas were dry. The study was conducted by Merritt Smith Consulting for the City of Santa Rosa. | |
