DescriptionKier Associates and the KRIS team used Landsat data from 1996 as interpreted by the U.S. Forest Service Spatial Analysis Lab in Sacramento and the California Department of Forestry Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP). Landsat derived vegetation data allows assessment of tree size and vegetation types in both uplands and riparian zones at a one hectare scale. The size classifications based on breast height diameter of trees. Change scene detection uses Landsat data from different years to track vegetation changes and coverages were from 1991-1996 and 1994-1999.

PurposeNo timber harvest maps are available from the California Department of Forestry for the Battle Creek watershed so Kier Associates (2003) acquired Landsat data to partially remedy this data gap (see Vegetation Types Background page) and assist Terraqua (2004) in characterizing upland sediment sources for the Battle Creek Watershed Assessment.
Data Quality InformationScale of Landsat vegetation data is one hectare. USGS 1:100 K hydrology center line errors confound quantification of riparian data. Change scene periods over-lap and may create redundancies when combined.
Use ConstraintsWithout improved hydrology, riparian zones cannot be quantified due to errors where forest types actually further than 100 m from stream might be included. Combined change scene is only a rough approximation when two periods are combined.

AbstractKRIS Battle Creek Version 2.0 captures remote sensing data based on Landsat, provided by the U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Forestry, that allow assessment of vegetation and tree sizes and the change in vegetation from 1991 to 1999. Dr. Paul Trichilo of Kier Associates and the KRIS team did data summaries and analysis in support of Terraqua and the Battle Creek Watershed Assessment and for use in KRIS Battle Creek V 2.0.
