KRIS Humboldt Bay: Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta Identifiersediment
Type of DataFine sediment data from shovel samples, McNeils and Freeze Cores
OriginatorPALCO and Keith Barnard
DescriptionMuch of the fine sediment data in KRIS Humboldt Bay comes from the PL Habitat Conservation Plan where data are presented in Appendix 5 and methods briefly cited in Chapter 3. Data on fine sediment are also included from Barnard (1992), an HSU M.S. Thesis that measured fine sediment in Freshwater Creek using freeze core sampling.

Access ConstraintsData from 1994-96 was provided in paper format and transcribed into electronic form for use in KRIS Coho. Barnard data were transcribed from M.S. and more recent FW data (1997-99) were provided as part of PL Freshwater WA.
Progress LogData for 1994-1997 in KRIS. More recent data has not been made available by PALCO.

Serial NamePALCO HCP
PurposeTo describe streambed conditions and monitor trends in PALCO streams. Barnard (1992) M.S. was a study of relationships of fine sediment and dissolved oxygen in redds.
Data Quality InformationPALCO HCP does not specify whether samples were collected using McNeil's or a shovel. It is also unclear if stilling wells, which prevent loss of fines, were used with shovel samples. Choice of 4.7 mm vs. 6.4 mm underestimates sand-sized particles.
Use ConstraintsBulk gravel samples are subject to several significant sampling issues, and none of this issues or the exact protocol are available. See critique by R. Klein. Barnard's (1992) use of freeze cores may retain fines better than bulk samples.
Supplemental InformationIncludes data collected by PALCO (1994-1999) and Barnard (1992). Data assimilated for KRIS Coho for Yager Creek include Winzler and Kelly (1980-81) and CDFG (1991-1994).
