Topic Sediment: Cause of Road Failures (1997)

Caption:  This chart shows results of the Klamath National Forest January 1997 Storm Damage Assessment report that categorized the reasons for road failures during the January 1, 1997 storm event. Most roads failed at stream crossings as culverts plugged or streams were diverted. Landslides were the second leading cause of road failure followed by fill failures, stream washouts, road cut failures and gullies. Road failures can contribute significantly to sediment yield to streams. The largest problems occur when multiple crossings fail on the same stream. Click on Info Links for more information.
