This graphic was prepared by Al Olson of the Klamath National Forest and shows the use of a reach of Indian Creek before and after the installation of instream structures. Dive surveys showed an increased use of the reach by young of the year coho salmon and yearling steelhead (top, after project), whereas the reach was used primarily by young of the year steelhead prior to treatment. Structural treatment was accelerating recovery from past flood effects, increasing habitat diversity, which in turn was used by a more diverse assemblage of salmonid juveniles.

Dive surveys before treatment showed use primarily by young of the year steelhead. Post project dives showed use by young of the year Chinook and yearling and young of the year steelhead. Extensive, shallow riffle habitat in many middle Klamath tributaries is a legacy of aggradation related to past floods such as 1955 and 1964. USFS restoration projects help reverse this simplification but are also subject to failure if damaging floods recur (See Tours: Indian Creek, Elk Creek).
