This large wood structure was installed by Klamath National Forest in Elk Creek in the early 1990s and appears in this photo to have been functioning well. Such structures provide cover for juvenile salmonids. This particular structure appears to have sorted stream gravels, providing suitable substrate for spawning as well. This type of structure had a high failure rate on Elk Creek as the result of the 1997 storm. See subsequent Pictures for post-1997. Boulder structures fared better see (Tour: Restoration Elk Cr USFS/KEV Photos Mile 3.75 in 1988/1997). Photo provided by Al Olson, Klamath National Forest.

Al Olson and Bill Beamis, fish biologists with the Klamath National Forest, survey damage to large wood structures in the margin of Indian Creek in September 1997. The January 1, 1997 Storm caused bedload shift and formation of major log jams which deflected flow and caused these structures to be isolated. See Pictures 3-5. Photo by Pat Higgins taken as part of the Mid-Program Evaluation of the Klamath Basin Fisheries Restoration Program (Kier Assoc., 1999). Click on Info Links for more information. September 1997.

Looking upstream in a dry side channel of Elk Creek which was formerly the main channel prior to the January 1997 Storm. Large logs in foreground and along the left margin were installed by Klamath National Forest to provide improved habitat diversity. A log jam formed just out of view upstream and deflected the creek's flow (see next Picture). Photo by Pat Higgins taken as part of the Mid-Program Evaluation of the Klamath Basin Fisheries Restoration Program (Kier Assoc., 1999). Click on Info Links for more information. September 1997.

This photo shows Elk Creek in September 1997 at left. The log jam at right, in combination with bedload build up, caused the channel to shift away from the channels at right where wood structures in previous photos were installed. Photo by Pat Higgins taken as part of the Mid-Program Evaluation of the Klamath Basin Fisheries Restoration Program (Kier Assoc., 1999). Click on Info Links for more information. September 1997.

A large woody debris jam at the top of the now dry side channel, looking upstream. Elk Creek now deflects down channel to the right in this photo. Photo by Pat Higgins taken as part of the Mid-Program Evaluation of the Klamath Basin Fisheries Restoration Program (Kier Assoc., 1999). Click on Info Links for more information. September 1997.

Bill Beamis stands next to large woody debris jam at the low end of the dry side channel that was also formed by the January 1997 Storm. New main channel of Elk Creek after January 1997 Storm, with the parallel dry side channel out of view to the left. This response reach is storing sediment transported by the flood and as a result was shallow and wide in September 1997.
