This photograph of the Shasta River riparian zone was taken from the Highway 263 bridge looking upstream in 1994. Note the thick growth of alders and willows on the right. The shade provided by the trees would have served to buffer high water temperatures. Photo by Pat Higgins.

This photograph shows the Shasta River just upstream of Highway 263 during the summer of 1997 after flood damage on January 1, 1997. A berm is being constructed to try to reclaim the flood terrace at right in the photo. No permits were obtained prior to this projects inception. Photo by Pat Higgins.

This photograph shows the Shasta River just upstream of Highway 263 in March 1997 after flood damage on January 1, 1997. Deposits of fine sediment have inundated the flood plain of the Shasta River burying a fence and pasture land. Note that remnants of the riparian zone were still intact after the flood. This photo taken from the Highway 263 Bridge looking upstream shows the reclaimed flood plane occupied by the January 1997 flood. The Shasta River is confined by the berm at the far edge of the excavated area which was constructed during the summer of 1997. Asphalt used for riprapping of the stream banks is shown in stockpiles in the foreground and at right. Photo by Pat Higgins.
