KRIS Mattole River: Chart Page

Area Western Mattole
Topic Habitat: Canopy by Type for Western Tribs

Caption:  Western Mattole streams were found to have 11-55% open canopy when surveyed by CDFG sometime between 1991-1999 (see Chart Table for survey dates). Coniferous canopy varied from 1-29%. Streams are ranked by drainage area to with the largest at the top. Despite being a fairly large stream, the South Fork Bear Creek had less than 20% open canopy. Small streams with greater than 20% open canopy are considered unsuitable for maintaining cool water temperatures necessary for salmonid rearing. The small unnamed tributary of Bear Creek and Bear Trap Creek were found to have greater than 36% open canopy. Click on Info Links for more information.
