This photo shows the Elk Creek estuary in February 2002. Note that there is only a small amount of woody debris on the beach and only four or five of large diameter. Photo by Pat Higgins, February 15, 2002.

The mouth of Elk Creek was open when this photo was taken on February 15, 2002 and would allow entry of winter steelhead. Steelhead return to spawn from December through April in small coastal streams like Elk Creek. Photo by Pat Higgins.

This photo shows a close up of Elk Creek estuary with the deepest area along the large rock where the creek scours before turning south and flowing to the sea. View of the Elk Creek estuary which has no cover from large wood and mostly small diameter wood on the terraces and beach. Habitat complexity and cover for rearing salmonids would be provided by large wood, were it available. It might also provide scour around which a deeper pocket would form. Hardwood species in the riparian zone of Elk Creek are in the foreground and following the draw in the center of the photo. The forest at middle distance appears to be a mix of conifers and Eucalyptus. Wet meadows form the back bench of the estuary at right. Photo by Pat Higgins, February 15, 2002.
