The Navarro River estuary is seen here looking east from the shoulder of Highway 1 before it merges with Highway 128, which can be seen on the far bank. Willow borders the estuary on the near side but riparian vegetation on the far side appears less lush, probably due to management of the roadway. The far hillside has a mix of conifers, brush, bay trees and other hardwoods. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

This photo was taken looking upstream off Highway 1 Bridge at the Middle Navarro estuary. Highway 128 is visible at left. Conifers form the overstory of the riparian zone at middle distance on the right and cover the hillsides in the distance. Thickets of willow and alder form the riparian immediately adjacent to the water. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

Close up of south bank of the estuary just above Highway 1 Bridge is shown above. The banks are stable and held by willow, alder and grasses. Water clarity is sufficient for salmonid growth and survival. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

This shot shows the Navarro River estuary looking downstream off the Highway 1 Bridge, with Highway 1 at right. The very windy environment may be responsible for the paucity of conifers on the hillslopes in the view downstream. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

This view is of the Navarro River estuary looking upstream off at the Highway 1 Bridge. Willows line the estuary bank in the foreground and at right but the banks immediately adjacent to the highway in middle distance are rip-rap. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

This view of the Navarro estuary looking downstream shows the prominent island, which has been a noticeable feature of the estuary since photos began being taken in the late 1800's. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.

This photo shows a portion of the north bank of the island in the Navarro River estuary, including mature conifers. The large pieces of partially submerged wood provide complex fish habitat. Photo by Pat Higgins, April 5, 2002.
