KRIS Navarro : Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta IdentifierDPR_pesticide
Type of DataPesticide use data
OriginatorCalifornia Department of Pesticide Regulation
DescriptionThe pesticide use data in KRIS database were extracted from the California Pesticide Use Reporting Database. It is a statewide database, but only data for the KRIS Navarro Project Area is presented here in KRIS Navarro. Pesticide applicators are required to submit data to county agricultural commissioners, who submit it the to Department of Pesticide Regulation. The dataset is compiled annually and CDs are released to the public each year (available on the DPR website for $10). Eli Asarian of KRIS staff used ArcView to link the data to a GIS layer of Public Lands Survey (PLS) sections, and calculated summaries using MS Access.

Data Quality InformationDataset is massive and self-reported, so likely contains errors. Quality control software is applied to catch obvious outliers. If errors are found after release, corrections are issued via the DPR website.
Use ConstraintsLocation reliability is broad and variable (see supplemental information). Different pesticides have different toxicities. Residential (and most industrial) pesticide use is not included in database.
Supplemental InformationLocation is reported the resolution of County and PLS sections. For areas with sections, that is a one square mile resolution. For areas without sections (areas with land titles originating from historical land grants, including almost all of Marin County), county is the only location information available from DPR (unfortunately many prime agricultural areas in Sonoma County are land grants without sections). Some county agricultural commissioners have more precise location information (which could link the DPR database using the SITE_LOC_ID in the raw DPR database). For instance, the Sonoma County the Agricultural Commissioner has a GIS layer of pesticide registration at the resolution of individual parcels, but was unwilling to contribute the data to KRIS. A GIS shapefile (pesticides_dpr_2001.shp) with summary Data are contained in KRIS ArcView map project and in the KRIS Map Viewer.
