DescriptionGround photographs of Chris and Stephanie Tebbutt's property along Anderson Creek, where they have been doing restoration work since 1983. The creek blew out in 1983, going from approximately 100 feet wide to over 800 feet wide. This washed away valuable agricultural land and left a wide, warm and open reach of creek. Shortly after the erosional event, the first grant from the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District was approved and wing deflectors with boulders were installed and trees planted behind the deflectors. Anderson Creek continued to present challenges and eventually larger rock weir were replaced with plastic gabions filled with river gravel. These provided mass to turn the energy of the river, but at much less cost than boulders. Deep planting of cottonwoods accelerated their growth. When cottonwoods were dislodged by the floods of 1997, some were moved to the opposite bank and re-planted. The sections both above and below the Tebbutt property have now been treated and the channel is approaching its pre-disturbance width as of 2003. Juvenile salmonids are able to survive in the pools in Anderson Creek at the Tebbutt's while conditions are adverse at most other locations.
