KRIS Navarro : Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta IdentifierUCDavis_snorkel
Type of DataSnorkeling surveys of fish in the Navarro River watershed
OriginatorUniversity of California, Davis John Muir Inst.
DescriptionThree sites were sampled in each of the following streams: Flynn Cr, North Fork Navarro River, Indian Cr, Anderson Cr and Rancheria Cr. The sites were selected by a stratified random process in which the subwatersheds were divided into three sections; upper, middle, and lower. Within each of these areas, a permanent site was selected that was initially a random location, but modified to account for ingress and access issues. The most recent Hankin and Reeves methodology was used and surveyors were calibrated using 3-pass electroshock.

Request LogMelissa Turner, a research assistant in the John Muir Institute, sent an excel spreadsheet of snorkeling surveys. I requested information on methodologies and received part of that information but still need to know which person was sampling on the day of the survey.
Follow Up Date Request3/4/02
Receipt LogI did not receive the accompanying data set of electrofishing data collected by Joaquin Feliciano, graduate student at UC Davis, used to correlate the effectiveness of each snorkeler. The data are part of Joaquin's doctoral dissertation and could not be shared.

PurposeSnorkeling surveys were conducted to determine local fish diversity and abundance.
Data Quality InformationUnknown. Not all snorkelers were calibrated with an electrofishing survey. Data are best used as an indication of presence absence and fish community structure.
Use ConstraintsFish density should be correlated to each surveyor.
Supplemental InformationGIS coverage of sampling locations.
Keywordssnorkle surveys, fish population
