KRIS Russian River: Chart Page

Area Basin-wide/Regional
Topic Aquatic Inverts: CDFG All Russian Tribs EPT Taxa 1997

Caption:  The California Department of Fish and Game conducted aquatic invertebrate studies of several Russian River tributaries that were recognized as having sufficient biological health to support salmonids. This chart shows the average number of mayfly (Ephemeroptera), Stonefly (Plecoptera) and Caddisfly (Trichoptera) species found in each creek reach in 1997. Three samples were taken at each location but values were averaged to attain the scores listed above. The EPT taxa gauges health by the diversity of these pollution intolerant Orders. The reference values on the chart are those chosen by Harrington (1999) and indicate that the health of streams ranges from poor in lower Willow Creek to very good in some reaches of Felta, Mill, Palmer and Ward Creeks. Note that the KRIS IFR project has added qualitative labels to these references to increase understanding of non-specialists but Harrington (1999) recommended that all metrics in combination should be used to judge health (Russian River IBI).
