Caption:  The chart above shows the percent of total annual aggregate extraction by source in Sonoma County for the years 1960-1977 and 1981-1990. Instream gravel extraction was the dominant mining method between 1960 and 1967. Terrace pit mining began in 1965 and replaced instream extraction as the dominant method by 1968. Aggregate extraction became more dependent on quarries and less dependent on terrace pits by 1981. See InfoLinks for more information.
