Looking south into the Mariposa Creek and West Fork Russian River drainage from the divide between the Russian and Eel River watersheds along the Tomki Road. Uplands have a mixture of conifers and hardwoods with minor amounts of chaparral. This watershed appears fairly intact with little indication of timber harvest or widespread development of uplands. Looking southwest in the Mariposa Creek watershed, the most westerly headwater tributary of the WF Russian River. Conifers tend to dominate the north facing slopes in the distance and also show up in the draws on the south facing slopes at lower left because of water there. The picture is taken standing on a south facing slope and the madrone and oak and shrubs of the chaparral frame the lower part of the picture. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

taken at the same spot as 062 but looking west. Shady, steeper slopes have conifers with a patch of chaparral and grassland showing near the ridge at right. The change in vegetation between hardwoods and conifers near middle of photo could be as a result of a large earthflow or possibly historic timber harvest. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

This photo taken looking southwest off Tomki Road. Oak woodlands dominate much of the hillside across the valley. Chaparral covers a ridge at lower right. The large conifers at left are part of the extended riparian of a headwater tributary of Mariposa Creek. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Conifers persist in the riparian zone of this steep, headwater tributary of Mariposa Creek. The south facing upper slopes are chaparral, oak and other hardwoods. The shade provided by the topography and the availability of water allow conifers to grow even on south facing slopes. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Photo taken looking west up main Mariposa Creek drainage. Conifers are growing along water courses and ephemeral tributaries on the north facing slopes in the distance with hardwoods dominating other areas of the slopes. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Looking up Mariposa Creek watershed just above where Tomki Road crosses the creek. Oak woodlands, other hardwoods and chaparral are apparent on south facing slopes at right and manzanita grows at lower right, indicating some mix of chaparral species on drier sites.
