This photo shows an unnamed trib to the West Fork Russian River off Westside Road looking upstream. Note that particle size distribution does not indicate excessive fine sediment supply, although some bank erosion is evident upstream. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Same un-named channel as in Picture #1 off West Side Road looking downstream with grass, shrubs and oak trees in the riparian. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Unnamed tributary of the West Fork Russian River looking downstream off West Side Road. The downstream bank at right does indicate down-cutting. Exposed banks caused by down-cutting often erode and headwater areas may gully as down-cutting proceeds upstream. The road crossing here may serve as a nick point to prevent head-cutting at this location. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

Red roots of willow extend down to the waters edge in this closeup of an isolated pool at the same location as Picture #3. Bull frog jumped from fringe of the pool as pool was approached for photograph. Sand is evident in the margins and on the bottom of the pool indicating some erosional source upstream. Looking downstream on unnamed trib (3) of the West Fork Russian River off West Side Road in upper Redwood Valley (just below East Side Road. The fence post in the air indicates that bank erosion has caused loss of agricultural land. Poison oak, bay and oak trees form the riparian.Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.

This photo shows the same unnamed West Fork Russian tributary as in Picture #5, but looking upstream off West Side Road in Redwood Valley. Note filter fabric in active channel which appears to be related to erosion control (see Topic on WF Russian Restoration). The native riparian zone that extends upstream appears to be dominated by oak trees with willows near the active channel. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 13, 2003.
