This photo shows a pool on Mark West Creek in a less steep and confined area below Mark West Springs. While banks have dense riparian vegetation, sun on the water indicates lack of a secondary overstory, which helps maintain cool water temperatures. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

A run habitat on Mark west Creek is shown in this photo looking upstream at the same location as Picture #1. The over hanging vegetation from the willows at left would provide good cover for fish. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

A closeup of the stream bottom of Mark West Creek at the same location as Pictures#1 and #2 shows a great deal of fine sediment as well as some gravel. The mild gradient here would make this a depositional reach where sediment may remain in residence longer than in steeper reaches. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

The gravel terrace here on Mark West Creek has more coarse substrate than the wetted channel. Particle size varies from small gravel to small cobble. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

This photo shows large woody debris partially embedded at the same location as Pictures #1- #4 along Mark West Creek. The stream has scoured a shallow pool around the wood. Note the larger particle size of the bed near the far shore because during high flows the channels energy is focused there. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

Looking upstream on Mark West Creek at the same location as previous Pictures, riparian canopy conditions look very good, but the glide habitat is shallow and the bottom covered with fine sediment. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

A closeup of the stream bed in Mark West Creek (same location as Pictures 1-6) shows cobbles covered with detritus and flocculent material. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
