This picture shows Porter Creek, a tributary of Mark west Creek. The road from Santa Rosa to Calistoga follows this creek which is in a confined reach here. The uplands here are oak forest but the topography of the land provides shade on the water helping keep water cool. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

This closeup of the stream channel of Porter Creek shows a coarse stream bed as would be expected at this high energy, confined reach. The overhanging bay trees and semi-aquatic plants provide cover over the stream. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

Porter Creek is shown in this photo looking downstream in a shady canyon just off the Santa Rosa-Calistoga Road. The habitat conditions here look very good with complete immediate canopy as well as a secondary overstory. Roots of mature riparian trees form stable banks at right with an undercut that provides cover for fish. Coarse stream bed would provide suitable areas for spawning. Photo by Patrick Higgins. This photo was taken at the same location on Porter Creek (Picture #3) but looking upstream. Juvenile steelhead young of the year were seen darting amongst cobble substrate in the riffles shown in this photo. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
