Riparian species include oak and bay trees. The uplands of the are dominated by hardwoods and shrubs, with conifers only thriving in small patches, often in the draws where there is more water. Looking upstream at the Mark West Creek watershed presents a very different view with the conifers of the canyon below giving way to oak woodlands and grasslands. Large oaks provide the riparian cover for Mark West Creek at right which turns away from the road, heading up to the south in the hills east of Santa Rosa. Photo taken looking east. Porter Creek joins Mark west here from the left. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
