Area Basin-wide/Regional
Topic Habitat: Canopy and Stream Width in Maine Salmon Rivers 1984-2000

Caption:  This chart shows the mean canopy density in all surveyed reaches of Maine salmon rivers as recorded during 1984-2000 habitat surveys by the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As expected, canopy coverage appears to be inversely proportional to channel width. Sheepscot River tributaries have much less canopy coverage than most other Maine salmon rivers, even though their widths were similar. Lack of riparian canopy can increase fluctuations in water temperature and be detrimental to salmonids. Mainstems and tributaries are listed separately, and then sorted by mean stream width. See Map to see canopy density for the stream reaches. See Info Links for more information.
