KRIS Sheepscot: Chart Page

Area Basin-wide/Regional
Topic Fish: Alewife Habitat Potential in Sheepscot River Watershed 1943-2003

Caption:  This chart shows the potential number of alewives that could be supported in the lakes and ponds of the Sheepscot River watershed. Lakes on ponds are grouped into three catagories: current, historically accessible, and historically inaccessible. The potential number of alewives for a waterbody is calculated by multiplying the surface area of the waterbody (in acres) by 235. In 1980 the Coopers Mills Dam was modified to exclude alewives, to protect the brook trout and brown trout at the Palermo fish hatchery from marine parasites. As a result, Sheepscot Pond is no longer available to alewives. See Picture or Info Links for more information about alewives and their life cycle. Data were contributed by the Department of Marine Resources.
