DescriptionPesticide monitoring data in surface water samples taken in seven of Maine's salmon-bearing rivers and their tributaries in late September 1997 by the Maine Board of Pesticides Control. Rivers included Dennys, Ducktrap, East Machias, Macmas, Narraguagus, Pleasant, and Sheepscot Rivers. Samples were analyzed for 33 pesticide chemicals and degradation (metabolic breakdown) products. Hexazinone, the only chemical detected, was present in 19 (29.4%) of the 64 samples collected. Data are from Chizmas (1999).

TitleStudy of Pesticide Levels in Seven Maine Atlantic Salmon Rivers
AbstractIn the fall of 1997, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) began an evaluation of the impacts of pesticide use on surface water systems. The first water bodies evaluated were the Dennys, Ducktrap, East Machias, Macmas, Narraguagus, Pleasant, and Sheepscot Rivers, collectively known as the "Seven Maine Atlantic Salmon Rivers." These rivers have received national and international publicity due to their status as natal habitats for a decreasing population of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Two BPC inspectors collected 64 surface water samples on September 22,23,25, and 26, 1997. The samples were analyzed for 33 pesticide chemicals and degradation (metabolic breakdown) products. Samples collected from three of the seven Atlantic salmon rivers,the Machias River, Narraguagus River, and Pleasant River, had detectable levels of a single pesticide, hexazinone. Samples collected from the two tributaries of the Narraguagus River also contained detectable hexazinone residues. A hexazinone degradate, hexazinone metabolite B, was detected in samples collected from the Narraguagus River and its two tributaries, and in one sample collected from the Pleasant River. Hexazinone was detected in 19 samples, or 29.7 percent of the total 64 samples collected. The levels of hexazinone in those 19 samples ranged from a low of 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) to a high of 1.7 ppb. No other pesticides or degradates were detected in any of the 64 samples.
