Topic WQ: Secchi Disk Transparencies in Upper Sheepscot Lakes
 
Caption:  This chart shows mean secchi disk transparencies measured in Upper Sheepscot lakes during the period of 1975-1999. These data were collected as discrete samples through the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program and in some cases only, one sample was collected per year and sampling often happened between July and September. The error bars show the standard error of measurements made over a single year. Turner and Travel ponds had transparency readings of 2.2 or less. Unless a lake is highly colored or turbid from suspended sediment, transparency readings of 2 meters or less indicate a severe algal bloom (Williams, 2002).
