Topic Tour: Restoration of an ATV Trail/Farm Access Road in the West Branch

This old county road, which is now privately owned, was severely impacted by ATV use, making in impassable by farm machines. This photo shows an old rock culvert that has collapsed. This area is about 50 feet from the West Branch (on the left). Photo by M. Halsted July 2003.

This area of the road is about 30 feet from the West Branch (on the right). The sunken road collects water which is held there by the clay banks. Photo by M. Halsted July 2003.

Several culverts were installed to replace collapsed rock culverts where small tributaries cross the road. The inlets and outlets of these culverts were stabilized with rocks. Photo by M. Halsted July 2004.

Geotextile fabric and drainage culverts were installed to firm up the road. Eight inches of gravel was placed on top of the gravel. Photo by M. Halsted July 2004.
