This photo shows how cattails, willow and shrubs have all colonized the rock baskets by 1999. The large cottonwood in the background was almost lost in the 1997 storms. See more evidence of how rock baskets become completely colonized in Pictures #2-6. Photo by Chris Tebbutt.

Willow and alder compete for space on the rock structure, which is trapping soil. Normally these seeds would be washed away but instead are caught by the vegetative hard point baskets and are able to get established. Photo by Chris Tebbutt. 1999.

This close up photo shows colonization of filter fabric placed inside the rack basket by mosses. The wicking action of the fabric helps seedlings and other vegetation get established. Photo by Chris Tebbutt.

Duckweed covers the slow moving water in pools scoured next to rock filled baskets, which have become vegetated hard points by 2000. Note alder, willow, grass and shrubs sprouting from the interstitial spaces. Photo by Chris Tebbutt.

This series of large rock baskets in 2001 shows that trees and other vegetation are colonizing their tops, but that sides are slower to become vegetated. Photo by Chris Tebbutt.

This pull back shot shows more how the massive structures are recontouring the adjacent stream bed, creating pools where there are few in lower Anderson Creek. Photo by Chris Tebbutt.
