KRIS Battle Creek: Chart Page

Area Basin-wide
Topic Sediment: Road Crossings/Stream Mile all Battle WA Sub-Basins

Caption:  This chart shows the number of road-stream crossings per mile of stream for sub-basins above Battle Creek Watershed Assessment aquatic monitoring sites (Terraqua, 2004). Road maps are incomplete and 1:100 K USGS hydrology data under-represent the stream network; therefore, estimates of road stream crossings in the Battle Creek watershed are likely conservative. Terraqua (2004) found: "The road-stream crossing frequency within the whole Battle Creek watershed is approximately 1.1 road-stream crossings per mile of stream. The average frequency of road-stream crossings at 51 sample sites was 1.3 road crossings per mile of stream. The highest frequency of road-stream crossings generally occurred at the same sites which had high near-stream road densities." While averages may be low for entire streams, there may be numerous crossings if shorter reaches are considered (see Pictures) creating high local CWE risk. See Info Links for more information.
